E3 Events - June 10-13th 2013

http://www.e3expo.com/
http://e3.gamespot.com/

So we've approached that time of year again, and this year's E3 events will be kicking off tomorrow.
As usual here are the conference times and links for the main companies again.

Microsoft
June 10th, 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm EST
http://e3.gamespot.com/press-conference/microsoft-e3/

Sony
June 10th, 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm EST

Nintendo
June 11th, 10:00 am to 11:00 am EST

Like always I'm looking forward to see what Nintendo has to show and announce. Though they decided not to do an E3 Press Conference this year, and are replacing it with a special monthly Nintendo Direct live stream instead, hopefully it can compare to their regular conference. They are however going to be having some E3 game demos available to play at select stores across the US and Canada, you can read more about that here, and find out the demo locations here for the US and for Canada. Nintendo said that they'll be concentrating on the games this year, and that we'll be seeing titles such as a new Mario Kart, 3D Mario game, the new Smash Bros game and more.

I'll be saving my opinions on all the consoles and games for my next post after E3 is done.

I should probably mention Pokemon X and Y will have it's own panel at E3... Or... Something like that. I can't remember the exact details, but X and Y is going to be showcased at E3.

While I am not one to doomsay a console, let it be known that the XBox1 is going to be DoA when it launches as it stands right now. I suspect that most consumers will stick to the Wii U and/or the PS4, and the PC, but that usually goes without saying.

Of course, things are not always set in stone so I would not exactly count XBox1 out juuust yet. But they'd have to really pull the stops for success from the way things look for them at the moment.

Everything else I've more or less expected, although I will say that I was very disappointed in the lack of a 'Dragon Quest Monsters 3D' localization.

The Microsoft conference didn't interest me much this year, while the Sony conference was pretty good and announced a few games that looked interesting. Such as FF15 and KH3, though they aren't going to be exclusive titles for the system.

Microsoft recieved a lot of backlash against their Used Games and Online DRM policies, and they stuck to it while likely assuming that Sony would be doing the same. However Sony didn't follow suit, which was the obvious choice given all of the bad feedback that it had gotten. Sony then proceeded to take stabs at Microsoft in their conference by saying that the PS4 didn't have any restrictions, or any of the specific restrictions that the Xbox One was going to, and they got a load of positive feedback as a result of this while driving the crowd into a frenzy as can be seen in this video.

Sony even slipped in the fact that you would now have to pay monthly if you want to have access to online multiplayer in this video, which was a sly move to distract away from it. By mixing that fact in with a topic of much larger importance, and with some humor to go along with it, they essentially made it seem unimportant and unnoticed in comparison to the main topic. I believe that the video was also meant to signify Microsoft handing the next generation over to Sony thanks to their mistakes.

Even though Microsoft did later say that they would be removing their Used Games and Online DRM restrictions, a good deal of damage was already done. Also Microsoft still requires Kinect to be plugged in at all times, even though they say that you can disable it software side. It's odd that they force you to have it always have it connected but allow you to disable it software side, which points to the fact that they want the ability to be able to always be able to turn it on from their side and use it to spy on you. It's no surprise to learn that they've been working closely with the NS of A. Though it's nothing a little damaging or modifying the Kinect hardware can't fix, but the fact that they're trying to force that on people in general is unacceptable.

Both companies say that used game restrictions are up to the developers, so there's still the possibility for there to be some forms of DRM. Though that's no different than previous generations, unless there's more frameworks in place now for enforcing it easily, which could lead to it being used more.

Though I'd say that the Nintendo conference was the winner again this year, even though they got overshadowed by the new consoles somewhat, which was partially contributed to by the fact that they didn't hold a regular conference this year like they usually do.

Nintendo announced and showed off many great looking games, such as Super Mario 3D World, the 2 new Super Smash Bros games, Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8, Mario and Luigi Dream Team and several others that make up a nice lineup of games, many of which I'd be interested in getting.

E3 Events - June 9-12th 2014

http://www.e3expo.com/
http://gamespot.com/e3/

It's that time of year once again, and the E3 conferences will be starting later today.
As always here are the times and links for the main conferences.

Microsoft
June 9th, 12:30 pm EST
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/e3/
http://www.gamespot.com/e3/microsoft-press-conference-2014/

Sony
June 9th, 9:00 pm EST

http://www.gamespot.com/e3/sony-press-conference-2014/

Nintendo
June 10th, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm EST
http://e3.nintendo.com/
http://www.gamespot.com/e3/nintendo-press-conference-2014/

So similar to what they did last year, Nintendo will be holding live streams online instead of holding a live conference at E3 again. One of the reasons that they're likely choosing to do this instead is because it allows them to broadcast separate live streams for each region at the same time, which is something that they normally do for their Nintendo Directs.

However they will also be holding many other events and live streams this year as they had announced in this video. You can find the list of the events and streams that they're doing here, and the Treehouse streams which they'll be doing here.

You can also find a list of live E3 streaming schedules for various websites here.

oh hey, new Star Fox

Oh hey, a new Zelda game for the Wii U that has an art style of WW and TP mixed.

Still no new Metroid announcement, been waiting on a proper sequel to Metroid 4 (Fusion) for a while now...

Also, PacMan being announced for the new Smash Bros was kinda expected, giving Namco's in the development of the games.

So Microsoft had a pretty good conference this year, they concentrated on games the entire time. While the Sony conference was quite boring, and they didn't have much in terms of major titles or games that I was looking forward to from them.

Nintendo had a great conference this year, and they a drew a lot of attention to themselves with their constant live streams and announcements throughout E3. Unlike how they barely got any attention last year because they strayed from the standard format, but they managed to make it work for them this year by providing far more content and events. I'd say that Nintendo definitely won E3 this year, and they'll probably be skipping the normal press conference again next year and will be sticking to this same format.

Though I've still got a pretty big backlog of games that I need to play, so I'm looking forward more to playing already available games instead of new ones that have yet to be released.

E3 2015 is right around the corner. What will the companies showcase this time?

I kinda expect Nintendo to focus on showcasing the new Zelda and Starfox games. I also think they'll touch on some of the games that isn't quite drawing a buzz like the Mario Maker game.

Nintendo

Just like last year Nintendo will be holding multiple different events and livestreams again, info for them can be viewed on their E3 website.

I'm not looking forward to anything in specific from E3 year, since while it's nice to see new and interesting games, I haven't been dedicating any time towards gaming the last few years. So my back log of games to play has remained mostly untouched, and I have more than enough available to play already if I ever feel like it.

E3 Events - June 13-16th 2016

The time is upon us yet again, as expected here's the times for the main conferences this year.

Microsoft

Nintendo

This year Nintendo will only be doing an all-day Treehouse Live stream that they'll announce and show new games off during, instead of a press conference or digital event like they used to do. Also disappointingly there won't be any news for their new Nintendo NX system shown at E3 this year, though it is scheduled to launch early next year so news about it shouldn't be too far off.

I haven't made any progress on my gaming back log since last year, so I'm not looking forward to any new games or anything in particular from E3 this year. I also stopped keeping to date with gaming news like I used to since the unfortunate passing of Iwata last year, who I used to enjoy watching for over a decade and that I felt Nintendo was in safe hands with.

I hope we get some good announcements from Nintendo this year. The past couple were okay, but nothing "outta the park" awesome like some of their better shows (2009, 2010, and 2012 were all good showcases for Nintendo, IMO.).

Like with Razon, I'm still in the middle of my backlog, Still need to beat Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation (already beat the other routes). And I'm almost done getting all of the Pokemon in Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon and Pokemon X.

I'd liked to see Mother 3 finally come out on the Virtual Console.

That's about it for E3 hopes. I don't plan on watching E3 tomorrow.

My best guess is that they don't believe that the market/fanbase is big enough and just don't care.

Which is practically a crime.

That's so weird to me. You think it wouldn't be that hard to put a small team on it. I don't feel like it would be a waste of resources, especially after they went to the effort to translate Mother 1.

They went through absolutely no effort to translate Mother 1. They just uploaded the unreleased Earth Bound (Zero) ROM they had 20 or so years after the fact.

True, it was completely finished but never released due to the SNES rolling out (I think?). From what I remember, all the censorship involved with it helped set some standards at the time for more Japanese games being developed with Western audiences in mind (don't quote me on this though; I haven't read about this stuff in a long while).

There's going to be a documentary about the original translation, which may be pretty neat.

I cant wait to see the Nintendo NX. Too bad it was not at E3. I think Nintendo does not want to reveal it too soon as Sony and MS might want to do a copy cat. Have a feeling it's going to do something way different. I cant wait.

Nintendo will be keeping with their usual pattern in recent years, hosting multiple live streams instead of a press conference.

I'm looking forward to see more of Super Mario Odyssey, which is supposed to be the first open world sandbox mario game since the likes of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. It's been nearly 15 years now since Sunshine was released, so it's been a long wait for a true sequel to those games.

Nintendo is keeping the same pace again this year, holding their usual live streams instead of conferences like the other companies.

Just getting this post up before the conferences start hitting.

Not looking forward to too much new in particular so far this year, but it's always interesting to see what new things get announced. It's nice to see that the Nintendo Switch is doing well, after how poorly the Wii U did in terms of sales and third party support.

For the first time sony announced that they won't be holding an E3 press conference this year, and they haven't announced a live stream in a different format to replace it either. Which is what nintendo did when they first stopped holding conferences, but this may just be a one off occurrence for sony.

However despite their absence this year I would still expect them to announce things during the E3 period, like most companies typically do. So if you're interested in sony related gaming news, just be on the lookout on typical gaming news outlets and the sony youtube and maybe twitch channel. Though if they do choose to have a suitable replacement stream or video, then I'll add the links for it to this post.

I haven't touched my gaming backlog or been closely following gaming related news for quite some years now, mainly just being on the lookout for major announcements at big events such as E3 or GDC and the like. So I'm not really hyped or looking forward to anything in specific, or even fully aware of what's been announced or already released for that matter.

There's just an endless amount of digital media available to consume in this day and age, whether it be reading, listening, watching, playing, interacting or even on the other side being one to create these things ourselves. There realistically isn't enough time to dedicate for everything, especially when even some individual things by themselves can eat up a great deal of time.

Though I'll still try to catch-up somewhat eventually, it's just that other things are higher on my priority list.
