Just happened to come across this while doing some browsing, and thought that it looked pretty awesome. Sonic 2 is a classic in the series or in general, I'd certainly like to play through it again with those remastered graphics and music and the widescreen view. As a fangame it's setting a pretty high quality standard as to what can really be done, especially with all the attention to detail that they're taking in re-creating everything as can be seen on the dev blog. They've also fixed glitches that were in the original, and plan to add new content such as zones that never made it into the final game and online multiplayer. From what's been shown so far I imagine that the full game is still awhile off, but it's surely something to look forward to.

Wow! That is actually really cool. Nice find! It'd be neat to see what they do with that. I'll probably have to remember to check on this again next year.

I've heard about this before. Looks and sounds pretty good. Much better then that garbage Sega would do (upscaled for HDTVs lol).

It seems they're getting pretty close to a demo release, they'll probably have it ready by the end of the year from the sounds of it.

Though speaking of sounds here's a link with music from the game that they posted on their project forum.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GGQPKwKeww

It contains many of the remixes of the songs that will be in the game. I gave it a listen through a few times and I think it sounds great.

On another note I found this developer interview for Sonic Adventure, it's interesting to hear about how they went about the development process and what their thoughts on it were and how they took the team and traveled around to experience the environments.

Hehe, those Sonic 2 remixes are fantastic!

I didn't watch the Sonic Adventure vids but the japanese do tend to do alot of hands on research or traveling for their project development. There's a great bonus on my gunsmith cats anime dvd that shows them going to Chicago for inspiration on the designs of the backgrounds and such for the anime. They also did alot of research on the weapons and vehicles the characters used.

They released an Alpha Demo on the main website the other day, you should check it out if you haven't already. It's only got Emerald Hill Zone but it gives you a chance to try the gameplay out, and see it running live in action.

It seems that there was a lot of internal conflict between the development team. It mostly stemmed from the lead developer who also caused a load of trouble with the DRM on the Alpha Release, which was falsely setting off virus scanners and caused a load of trouble. You can read all about it here and here.

Unfortunately it's Game Over for the Sonic 2 HD project, as of yesterday it was Officially Cancelled.

I originally thought that there was hope that this game would be finished when I came across it, the fact that the updates slowed to a crawl was a red flag though, and now we finally know why the progress came to a halt.

When it comes down to it, even big companies cancel games, and the actual completion ratio for fan projects is really low. So I suppose that this was the expected outcome, of course you always want to hold out hope that the games will actually be finished and not end like this. On the bright side we at least got the alpha demo for it, and a nice sample of the soundtrack.

The other big sonic fan project Sonic Fan Remix went on development hiatus last year, so that game is basically as good as cancelled too. If you haven't seen it then you can check it out here. http://www.sonicfanremix.com/

Ah, that's unfortunate. It looked like it would've been really neat too.

Oh well... it happens all too often. So as you said, it's not too surprising.

So more than 2 years after it was first cancelled, they officially restarted the Sonic 2 HD Project!

Quote:
Hello everyone!
The only thing more surprising than seeing an official post from us here is our announcing that S2HD is no longer dead.

You read that correctly: work has once again begun on Sonic 2 HD! That said, we'd like to give you all a brief tie-in for recent events leading to the project's reboot.

As many of you know, the leading reason behind the project's cancellation was due to the programming element being removed with no possibility of return in its existing form. As of last year, this changed. Before anyone raises the question, no, the former programmer and the S2HD team members have not had a reunion; instead, a fan of the project independently created and submitted his own engine to Vincent, the project leader, for evaluation. After integrating the art assets from the alpha release and successfully testing it, Vincent began to let the rest of the prior team members know, and we've picked up where we left off sans those who are unavailable due to real life obligations. Two other talented programmers have since offered their skills to recreate the game's physics to match the original, and to port the game to the Mac OS platform (the latter of which is still in the earliest possible stage, and we have no estimate on when it will be playable, so stay tuned!).

In response to some of the questions we have seen, the Alpha Release build is officially discontinued and will not get any form of support as we do not have the source code. The next release will be entirely new programming from the ground up.

We'll provide more details in how you can help us out in the next few days. It's good to be back!

Remember Sonic 2 HD, which unceremoniously died following its alpha release because of nonsense regarding former project programmer L0st? The quick excitement and then sorrow of the project’s release and cancellation reverberated across the Internet and it looked like the dream had finally died.

Not so fast. In the waning hours of Sonic’s 23rd Birthday (and we do hope you keep your Sonic memories coming in), the Sonic 2 HD Facebook group sprung back to life and announced the project was back on. Turns out that a newcomer, who remains anonymous, stepped up with an engine to fill the hole L0st’s firing caused, and the engine received approval by project head Vincent.

While the team is a short a few members from its original development (citing real life obligations), it looks like the project will continue development. If any of you are feeling creative and have the skills to assist the group, it may not be a bad time to contact the team and show them your stuff.

I'm sure that most people weren't expecting this, especially considering the events that surrounded it's initial cancellation. So it's certainly a nice surprise to hear that they'll be continuing it, and hopefully things go better for them this time around.

They've started updating their Developers Blog and their Facebook page again, and according to their most recent blog post, they'll be doing regular progress updates and releases as the game progresses.

As someone who posts on Sonic Retro regularly, I was quite surprised when I found out this game was being resurrected. It's too bad the previous programmer was such a douchebag. He was basically the reason the game got cancelled initially. Also, the guy who was the original programmer behind Sonic Fan Remix now does programming for a fangame called Sonic Time Twisted.

After more than 3 years since they restarted the project, they've finally made enough progress to release a beta version of the game. It features 3 full zones from the game to try, and you can grab it over at their new website.
