Can't you just hold it like you would on panel A? You know you can jump with Y or A, right? I hate to sound like a complete prick, but that just sounds like nitpicking to me.
I just played a little bit of Super Star via Kirby's Dream Collection (using the Classic Controller, of course) and then a little Super Star Ultra, and I didn't really have any problems. It took me all of five seconds to get used to the slightly different button layout for each one. Maybe it's because I played both the original and enhanced games to death and beyond, but I don't recall having any real problems playing either or back to back.
Shame to hear you didn't care for it though, as it's easily one of the best games on the DS's library.
