"Sentai" means "group", so calling them "Sentais" is a pretty huge misnomer.

Greetings all! I have returned once more, proving again that I have a lot of free time! Today we're going to be discussing Bomberman Land for PSP.

[Collapse] Bomberman Land (PSP)
For starters let's talk about the story. This series features all the same cast we've seen in other iterations: Cheerful White, Cool Back, Cute Pink and Team Gold. Basically everyone decides they want to go to Bomberman Land so they all hop aboard a plane and off they go. During some antics on the plane, the pilot (Pink's butler Charlie) is knocked unconscious and the plane crashes into Bomberman Land!

Image: http://i.imgur.com/C82Hpcp.gif

Are they serious?! The game literally begins with a plane crash and everyone on the island has amnesia! What a horrible idea for the plot to a party game! As a result of the crash, not only is everyone suffering from memory loss but apparently most the island was destroyed/vanished somehow. It's all nonsense just to feed the reasoning why you're even there.

So the next thing is this weird little Bomber guy with the cowboy hat. Apparently this is Mini Bomber and he's your new partner! White Bomber is silent the entire game so this guy fills the role of not only the dialogue but also the comedy. He constantly makes sassy comments and complains, showing a bit of a temper. Sounds about right for most games of this nature.

Image: http://i.imgur.com/QyYcSb8.png

Now this brings me to a big point here. Nearly all of the dialogue in this game is useless, and I'm talking completely useless. Every attendant you talk to that operates the minigames has amnesia and speaks jibberish, often in their own little world. The rules they explain are the only valuable things to be noted.

This game has 150 "pieces" or items that must be collected to unlock more minigames and areas. Outside of playing these games, you must talk to strangers and perform random tasks to convince them to give you other pieces. This has resulted in some of the weirdest, most pointless cutscenes of all time in a video game. Below are some GIFs that show dialogue trees where you must embrace silly/random conversation just to progress the game.

Feel free to take a few minutes and look these over.

Image: http://i.imgur.com/rwAcHFk.gif Image: http://i.imgur.com/VxTtC3k.gif

I saved the best for last. At two different points in the game, White and Mini Bomber have discussions about the restrooms. This happens twice in the game! It's funny yes but so uncharacteristic of a Bomberman game.

Image: http://i.imgur.com/25dcj20.gif Image: http://i.imgur.com/Eo5VKON.gif

Well that's an all time low...

Anyway, once you get far into this game you meet the antagonist: Dark Bomber. Apparently they're some kind of bee?

Image: http://i.imgur.com/7iEyQPY.png

I don't really get it either. Before you get to challenge this guy to a minigame, you must first defeat all of his cohorts. In order we have Dark Witch, Dark Piece, Dark Doll, and Dark Rose. All the names make sense except for Piece. I really don't understand what they mean by that.

Image: http://i.imgur.com/d0OhIgS.png

Supposedly they are the evil doers behind everything that happened and beating them triggers an ending that's about as you would expect. What's weird is, there's still an entire post game to complete that allows you to collect the remaining pieces. Before it lets you do that, there's a final cutscene where it reveals the Director of the park was to blame for all these antics.

Image: http://i.imgur.com/0vMknqp.gif

It never fully explains what happened but from what I gathered, the Director had some kind of device that was intended to improve Bomberman Land. When the plane landed on it, it destroyed it and caused the areas to disappear but Dark Bomber took the blame for it. Weird they tried to put a plot twist into such a weak story.

Well that's the majority of things to say. The dialogue is long and boring, the story is pointless. All that's left to comment on is the minigames which are a bit weird at times. Here's a few GIFs that shows off some of the more humorous ones.

Image: http://i.imgur.com/Bi2JvjM.gif Image: http://i.imgur.com/dUJ7L7l.gif

Bomberman is driving a semi-truck, playing with bubble wrap and pulling on toilet paper; among other things. I should note in the final one where he is slamming into other cars while driving a tank, you can sound your horn and if you do it incessantly, the game stops your car and scolds you. How bizarre.

Well there's another one in the can for today. Join me next time when I go GIF crazy with more Bomberman stuff!

Bomberman Land for the PSP... It wasn't quite one of my most smartest purchases. Those mini-games- toilet paper mini-game.

One part that really stuck with me from that game, it was Dark Rose's message where she threatened Bomberman with a spanking. o.o
It was so sudden, I couldn't help but laugh at it.

Nooo, you left out the best part; when you finally collected all the pieces! You've got to post that. I was seriously laughing for like 10 minutes when you showed it to me.

This game... is like a prime case study in bad design. All that repetitive, unnecessary, uninteresting dialogue... and ceaseless dialogue trees that don't even branch! What's the point?

Also, am I the only one who absolutely cannot stand the walk cycle? It's just so awkward and sloppy. I'm assuming that the backgrounds are pre-rendered because it looks like the feet should be clipping through the floor. If you take a look at that intro GIF, in which the plane is lifting off, you can see the flames do something similar - while it's still resting on the "ground", the flames extend to their full length, as though there's no floor.

I agree about the walk cycle. It's almost like he's bouncing into frame. That, and the backgrounds just seem like they're swapped out like on an old TV show. It seems really cheap.

But Plasma's right. I did neglect to mention the final slap in the face. As I was saying, it takes about 100 of these pieces in order to challenge Dark Bomber and his minions. Then you enter the post game where a final world opens up with a few more minigames and weird things.

[Collapse Text]
One notable feature is the Attractions Challenge, where you must play all the minigames in a big o' gauntlet! The game does let you save your progress after every 10 minigames but considering there's about 50, it'll be tough to overcome it. Once you clear it, you do earn a nice crown.

In order to access this challenge, you'll probably need close to 140 pieces. Now you would imagine something awesome happening when get all 150 right? I mean, you beat the game and went the extra mile to achieve everything you can in this game. Beating the Attractions Challenge makes sense but getting all 150 must be something cool like a new mini-game.

.....is this real life? Not only do I get nothing, but that lame ass Director emails me and literally tells me I get nothing. Out of all the dialogue ridden moments I endured in this game, they can't even give me something special. No cutscene? No secret minigame? No new hat?

I originally didn't intend to get all 150. I just wanted to progress a little further and see all the minigames but I ended up being so close, I figured why not. When I saw the email, I really had a moment of disbelief. It felt like the Director was a real person, and a real asshole all at the same time. They did all that nonsense with the story and nothing happens when you get all 150. Just great Hudson, just great.

Haha, I watched an LP of this game for reasons some time ago. Mini Bomber definitely helps save a little bit of the tedium of the game. (Only a little, though.)

What I would like to see from someone is a comparison on which minigames were repeated or iterated on across the different minigame collections. I was watching another LP (maybe Bomberman Land for Wii?) and I played both Bomberman Land Touch and the Bomberman Jetters Game Collection, and there were a few that struck me as having appeared multiple times in this particular subset of Bomberman games.

@Sora I may do something to that effect if I get around to playing the rest of them. I've been jumping around just playing games at my leisure but I'm keeping track of everything I do. I have videos of every minigame on my computer so I need to get to doing some dropboxing.

Also, just to share this with everyone, today is the 10th anniversary of Bomberman Land PSP! It was released ten years ago in Japan! The coincidence is blowing my mind right now! https://www.gamefaqs.com/psp/937677-bomberman-land/data

Hey guys. I was reading the Scott Pilgrim comics the other day and found a panel that makes a reference to Bomberman.

Edit: These are from Issue 2 Page 29 and Issue 3 Page 56 respectively.

Oh, how interesting. They're playing Bomberman World!

...I...never got to play Bomberman World with any real people, only AI opponents... Maybe my brother or his brother once or twice...

Recently my brother commissioned someone to make the Astral/Elemental Knights for him. He's not a big Bomberman fan at all but we did grow up playing the 64 titles together and TSA was one of our favorites. He used to draw them all the time while I played. Good times.

Ha ha, glad you guys like them. I don't know what he's paying apiece for them yet but I'll ask. He said he also plans on having the other characters made (Rukifellth, Lilith, etc.)

@legato TSA was one of your favorites? You actually owned TSA when it was still sold in stores? Interesting. I don't know anyone who owned a copy of the game when it was still in its print run.
