If you're going into metal gear mode, totally should try out the non solids, in the least Metal Gear 2 for the MSX, should try the first one too. Go back to the slightly softer more pixaly roots ;P.
I have actually played the original titles, thanks to Subsistence. Metal Gear 2 is an excellent game, among my top five favorite Metal Gear games, and the first is kind of the same thing as the NES one, although not as much BS.
I actually tried Snake's Revenge too. XD Game was too hard (the first boss in particular).
